SOPFEU Mission

Optimize forest fire protection to ensure the sustainability of the forest environment for the good of the community, and to do so at the lowest possible cost.

The challenge is great. Each year in Quebec, an average of 486 fires affect thousands of hectares of forest in the intensive protection zone. Discover each of the sectors that make SOPFEU a unique company in Canada.

SOPFEU employees are strategically placed throughout Quebec. At the head office in Quebec City and the four main bases (Baie-Comeau, Roberval, Maniwaki and Val-d'Or), there are mainly firefighters, protection officers and air attack officers.

This personnel is supported by a capable administrative service and crews that provide guidance and support to specialized operations. Everything is done to ensure the organization continues to work as efficiently as possible.

At SOPFEU, educational and awareness campaigns are among the many tools used when it comes to prevention. And for good reason! Close to 350 fires are caused by human activity every year in the intensive protection zone. In fact, statistics show roughly 70% of fires are caused by humans. To address this situation, the fire prevention and information department works in collaboration with the media to inform the public about high-risk situations and to broadcast the fire danger. Also, as soon as the situation warrants it, the SOPFEU will suggest applying preventive measures.

Preventive measures

When the situation requires it, the SOPFEU issues certain preventive measures intended to reduce the occurence of wildfires. This section is designed to inform the public on the measures in effect, and thanks to the interactive map, user can view affected areas.

The Preventive measures section may display French as well as English contents.
